A Taliban spokesman said they had shot down the helicopter in a mountainous region in Kunar province. The US-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said it was investigating the cause of the crash.
It said in a statement that the troops came under fire from militants but the crew and passengers of the helicopter were safe.
A government spokesman for the Kunar province Safiullah Wasifullah Wasify told the Associated Press news agency that the helicopter went down early on Monday in the Chapa Dara district.
He said he had received reports that it was shot down by a rocket.
